Coaching questions
Risk-based judgement
Approach → early scan Stop/creep point → decision scan
      [L] [R] [L] [R] [L]
          ↓ ↓
Plan (wait/go/creep) Commit only if safe
  1. Exercise 1: “Stop–Look–Explain” verbal scan
Task: At every give-way/stop, pupil says: “Left… Right… What’s my plan… What makes it safe?”
    Coaching question: What happened?
Success standard: Looks are early enough to inform the decision; not a last-second glance.
  2. Exercise 2: “Creep & Peep” (restricted view routine)
Task: Stop at line → scan; if view blocked, creep to a new view point → stop → rescan → decide.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (rushing / pressure / misreading gaps)?
Success standard: Decision based on visibility + closing speed, not hope.
  3. Exercise 3: “Speed & Gap calibration”
Task: Before choosing a gap, pupil labels approaching traffic: fast/medium/slow and explains why.
Coaching question: What happened (what confirmed you were right/wrong)?
Success standard: No one else has to slow/stop because of the pupil’s entry.
  4. Exercise 4: “Observe twice” (early + decision point)
Task: One scan on approach, one scan at the commit point; pupil says “Reset” if rushed and repeats.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (exact look points)?
Success standard: Consistent “look-hold-assess” not flick-glances.
  5. Exercise 5: “Stall-proof junction reset”
Task: If stall happens: secure → breathe → restart → FULL scan again → move only when safe.
Coaching question: Why did it happen / What will you do differently next time?
Success standard: Stall recovery does not degrade observations (prevents a new safety fault).

Success standard: Mirror check precedes the action and changes the plan when needed.
  2. Exercise 2: “Late mirror = reset”
Task: If mirror check is late (after steering/braking), pupil must abort action safely and reset sequence.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (workload, distraction, overfocus forward)?
Success standard: Breaks the habit of acting first, checking later.
  3. Exercise 3: “Roundabout lane change protocol”

Task: When brake lights appear ahead, pupil increases buffer rather than matching brakes late.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (late anticipation)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Tailgated response plan”
Task: If tailgated, pupil maintains safety, increases forward gap (creates space), avoids harsh braking.

Coaching question: Why did it happen (late recognition)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Don’t squeeze cyclists”
Task: Meeting situations with cyclists/VRUs: hold back if needed; pass only when space is safe.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your VRU rule)?

Judgement – Overtaking

DTR heading: Judgement – Overtaking.

  1. Exercise 1: “Overtake checklist”
Task: Pupil must justify: need/benefit, space, visibility, speed differential, return-in space.
Coaching question: What happened (what did you miss in the plan)?
  2. Exercise 2: “Abort plan safely”
Task: If conditions change, pupil must abort early without forcing others to brake/swerve.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (commitment bias)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Overtake vs wait”
Task: Compare two decisions (wait vs overtake) and evaluate risk/time gain realistically.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your ‘benefit vs risk’ rule)?

Judgement – Crossing

DTR heading: Judgement – Crossing (e.g., turning across traffic).

  1. Exercise 1: “Gap acceptance threshold”
Task: Pupil defines a minimum safe gap for different speeds/roads; practises consistent acceptance.
Coaching question: What happened (did you underestimate closing speed)?
  2. Exercise 2: “Two-stage turns”
Task: Where appropriate, teach two-stage crossing: move to refuge/centre when safe, then complete turn.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (trying to do it all in one risky move)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Cancel and wait”
Task: If doubt: pupil must cancel the move and wait. Practise resisting pressure behind.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your doubt rule)?

Positioning – Lane discipline

DTR heading: Positioning – Lane discipline.

  1. Exercise 1: “Lane-centre hold”
Task: Pupil keeps within lane lines through bends/junctions without cutting/straddling.
Coaching question: What happened (what made you drift)?
  2. Exercise 2: “Roundabout lane tracking”
Task: Practise lane tracking using road markings/signs; no lane changes without mirror checks.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (late plan / uncertainty)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Wrong lane = safe reroute”
Task: If wrong lane, follow it safely and reroute; never swerve across lines last second.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (early planning cue)?

Manoeuvres – Forward park

DTR heading: Manoeuvres – Forward park.

  1. Exercise 1: “Slow approach, big scan”
Task: Parking at walking pace with repeated all-round scans; prioritise pedestrians moving behind/between cars.
Coaching question: What happened (where did you stop looking)?
  2. Exercise 2: “One correction only”
Task: Aim: park with max one correction. Improves set-up and steering judgement.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (set-up too tight/wide)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Finish checks”
Task: Finish centred in bay and secure; then safe exit procedure when asked to move off again.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your finish standard)?

Manoeuvres – Pull up on the right and reverse

DTR heading: Manoeuvres – Pull up on the right and reverse.

  1. Exercise 1: “Right-side stop legality + safety”
Task: Choose safe place on right; manage traffic; secure; avoid creating hazard/obstruction.
Coaching question: What happened (what risk did that spot create)?
  2. Exercise 2: “Reverse straight with scans”
Task: Reverse slowly, repeated all-round checks; stop immediately if anyone approaches.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (mirror-only reversing)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Move-off after reverse”
Task: Full move-off safety routine after completing manoeuvre (often where faults occur).
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your post-manoeuvre reset)?

Controlled stop (emergency stop)

DTR heading: Controlled stop.

  1. Exercise 1: “React–Brake–Clutch–Secure”
Task: Pupil practises prompt reaction, firm controlled braking, clutch at the right time, secure stop.
Coaching question: What happened (too slow reaction / harsh / skid risk)?
  2. Exercise 2: “Post-stop observations”
Task: After stop: full rear observations before moving off (common safety failure point).
Coaching question: Why did it happen (task fixation after the stop)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Calm reset”
Task: Teach: breathe, secure, check, then go — no panic restart.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your reset rule)?

Ancillary controls

DTR heading: Ancillary controls (wipers, demisters, lights etc.).

  1. Exercise 1: “Find without looking”
Task: Stationary drill: pupil locates key controls by touch; then repeats on-the-move only when safe.
Coaching question: What happened (did you take eyes off the road too long)?
  2. Exercise 2: “Weather trigger plan”
Task: Pupil states triggers: misting → demist; rain intensity → wiper speed; low visibility → lights.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (late response to conditions)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Safety-first rule”
Task: If unsure, slow/secure the car first before adjusting; never compromise steering/path control.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your priority rule)?

Vehicle safety questions (show me / tell me)

DTR heading: Vehicle safety questions.

  1. Exercise 1: “Teach-back method”
Task: Pupil explains each answer as if teaching a new learner (improves understanding vs memorising).
Coaching question: What happened (what part do you not actually understand)?
  2. Exercise 2: “On-the-move show-me safety”
Task: Only perform show-me when road is simple; maintain lane and speed first; postpone if unsafe.
Coaching question: Why did it happen (task overload)?
  3. Exercise 3: “Micro-mocks”
Task: Start each lesson with 2 questions; track accuracy and confidence; fix weak ones immediately.
Coaching question: What will you do differently next time (your practice habit)?
